REPORT CARD VS. BENGALS
PASSING OFFENSE: C -- QB Jason Campbell simply isn't good enough yet to win games on his own, so when the running game isn't working, he struggles. Campbell had a solid 89.4 passer rating, but he didn't have a completion over 20 yards against an atrocious Bengals defense. WR Santana Moss made a gorgeous touchdown catch to give the Redskins some life but was penalized for his celebration. TE Chris Cooley had six catches for 51 yards, but his fumble on the third play helped give the downcast Bengals some hope en route to a stunning 17-0 lead.
RUSHING OFFENSE: C-minus -- Clinton Portis got off to another slow start after two seriously down games. Portis heated up for a while but still finished with just 77 yards on 25 carries. It didn't help that LT Chris Samuels is out for the season with a torn triceps and that RT Jon Jansen was out with a sprained knee. Campbell scrambled well, but FB Mike Sellers was thwarted on back-to-back goal-line runs in the third quarter, fumbling on the second one, a play that might have sealed the Redskins' fate.
PASS DEFENSE: C-minus -- Defensive coordinator Greg Blache's curious decision to bench Carlos Rogers to start the game hurt when Rogers did play and was beaten badly by Chris Henry for Cincinnati's second touchdown. That wasn't nearly as ugly as the sixth-ranked defense allowing Cedric Benson to take a screen 79 yards to set up that score. Fourth corner Fred Smoot blew a key late tackle on third-and-8 on T.J. Houshmandzadeh that allowed the Bengals to get in field-goal range and burn 1:37, leaving Washington's offense just 2:20 left to try to mount a last-ditch comeback.
RUSH DEFENSE: D-plus -- Ryan Fitzpatrick, a marginal NFL quarterback, and Benson, a major bust for the Bears, both made Washington's run defense look foolish at times. WLB Rocky McIntosh was so bad that Blache benched him for journeyman special-teamer Alfred Fincher. S Mike Green, starting for the injured Chris Horton, had six tackles, including a team-high four solo stops. H.B. Blades, starting again for injured SLB H.B. Blades, led the defense with seven total tackles.
SPECIAL TEAMS: C-minus -- Penalties on Chris Wilson (two) and special teams co-captain Khary Campbell negated much of the yardage on three good punt returns by Moss and Antwaan Randle El. Shaun Suisham made both of his field-goal attempts but booted two kickoffs out of bounds. Rock Cartwright returned three kickoffs over 30 yards, including an 87-yarder that set up a field goal. Ryan Plackemeier had a big day, deftly placing a 59-yard punt at the Cincinnati 5 and later pounding a 62-yarder after his 52-yarder was called back by a penalty.
COACHING: F -- That Jim Zorn failed to motivate his players for a game they desperately needed against a Bengals team with nothing to play for was evident when Washington fell behind 17-0 after less than 19 minutes. He also failed as the offensive boss by generating just 13 points against a bad Cincinnati defense. Blache's defense couldn't stop the NFL's worst offense early or late, and his last-minute benching of Rogers raised eyebrows. Special teams coach Danny Smith's units continued their season-long struggles.
