REPORT CARD VS. COWBOYS
PASSING OFFENSE: A-minus -- QB Jason Campbell posted his third straight game with a passer rating of at least 100, shaking off two early sacks and completing 20 of 31 throws for 231 yards and two TDs. Campbell showed good mobility and made some smart decisions. WR Santana Moss (eight catches, 145 yards) had another huge day against Dallas while WRs Antwaan Randle El and James Thrash each added his first TD of the season. The blocking settled down after a rough start.
RUSHING OFFENSE: A -- RB Clinton Portis got better as the game went on, gaining 85 of his 121 yards in the second half with some classic power running. The line opened some good holes for both Portis and backup Ladell Betts, who carried on 11 of 12 plays on Washington's final drive.
PASS DEFENSE: B-minus -- Elite pass-rusher Jason Taylor was out following calf surgery. CBs Shawn Springs (calf) and Fred Smoot (wooziness) missed much of the second half. But the Redskins didn't buckle against Tony Romo, Terrell Owens, Jason Witten and Co. CB Carlos Rogers controlled Owens while rookie SS Chris Horton had a fine interception in his first start.
RUSH DEFENSE: A -- The starting front four combined for just one tackle, but they tied up the Dallas blockers enough to allow LBs London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh and the rest to gang-tackle Cowboys RB Marion Barber, who managed just 26 yards on eight carries. Terrell Owens did run for 11 yards on his two end-arounds.
SPECIAL TEAMS: B-plus -- PR Antwaan Randle El's 10.3-yard average on four returns was his highest since Week 3 of 2007. KR Rock Cartwright had a 30-yard return and two mediocre ones. K Shaun Suisham was perfect from 20, 33, 33 and 29 yards. Rookie P Durant Brooks had a big day, averaging 46.3 gross and 42.8 net. The kick coverage was excellent, as usual.
COACHING: A -- Jim Zorn joined Richie Petitbon as the only Redskins coaches since 1971 to win their first games against the Cowboys. And Petitbon's wasn't in Dallas, where his 1993 Redskins got blasted that December. Zorn did a fine job of calling the plays, particularly in the second quarter when Washington racked up 184 yards and 17 points. Coordinator Greg Blache's defense did a marvelous job against the vaunted Dallas offense.
