Washington Redskins Notes, Quotes 2009-05-15
--Defensive end Phillip Daniels, a starter the past 12 seasons, wasn't angry when the Redskins used the 13th pick overall in last month's draft on Texas Brian Orakpo.

That's not just because Daniels, a past winner of the Good Guy Award voted on by the media who cover the Redskins, is a gentle giant.

At 36 and coming off a year on injured reserve with two torn knee ligaments, Daniels knows that his NFL tenure is dwindling. Daniels, who has never advanced even to a conference championship game during his career with Seattle, Chicago and Washington, badly wants to win a championship. That's why he decided to swallow his pride and accept the Redskins' minimum salary offer in March, a month after he had been cut.

So having watched tape of Orakpo, Daniels urged the Redskins to draft him.

"Brian reminds me of me when I was coming into the league," Daniels said. "I was a tweener coming out of college. I weighed 263 pounds and I had started at linebacker my junior year."

--The Redskins have been searching for a receiver with decent size for several years, even drafting two, Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, in the second round in 2008. Former Tennessee starter Roydell Williams is the latest alternative.

Williams signed on May 4 after attending Minnesota's minicamp the previous three days on a tryout basis. Williams led the Titans with 55 catches in 2007 while producing 710 yards and four touchdowns before missing all of 2008 with a broken ankle that led to his release.

"It's been a tough road," said the 6-foot, 187-pound Williams, who participated in the Redskins' organized team activities May 4-7. "I'm still shocked to this day (that I was cut). I feel like I can come in and compete for a job. I catch the ball well and I run good routes."

Williams, 28, ran 40 yards in 4.48 seconds when he was coming out of Tulane in 2005. He played with Jason Campbell in the Senior Bowl that January and trained with the future Redskins quarterback before that draft.

Three days after signing Williams, the Redskins signed Keith Eloi, a diminutive rookie free agent receiver from Nebraska-Omaha, a standout during their May 1-3 minicamp. And Washington had offered contracts to veteran wideouts Kelley Washington and D.J. Hackett, both of whom, like Eloi, had attended minicamp on a tryout basis. Washington opted to sign with the Ravens.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "This journey I've taken has been a good one and ... an enlightening one. It has helped me become a better player, a better person. When (I was cut), even though it hurt, it ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me because it put a fire under my feet that apparently I hadn't had for a few years. When your back's against the wall, you really learn a lot about yourself. I got to make sure I'm on my 'A' game every week. I can't relax at all." -- Defensive end Renaldo Wynn on returning to the Redskins after a year with New Orleans and a year with the New York Giants. Wynn, a backup in 2006 in Washington, was cut at the end of preseason in 2007.
