Washington Redskins Notes, Quotes 2009-05-08
--It was raining steadily, but there was a smile on Jason Campbell's face when the Redskins opened minicamp on May 1. After all, he was back on the field and still Washington's unquestioned starting quarterback despite management's failed attempts to acquire Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez in April to replace him.

"There (was) a lot of stuff going on this offseason, emotionally and mentally, but I'm at a standpoint now where I've got to put all that behind me," Campbell said. "I can't be out on the field, playing games, where I'm feeling pressure to do certain things to get a new contract or in order to prove a certain point. I'm not going to do that. I'm going to do what I do and just do it better."

Before the team took the field, coach Jim Zorn talked to the players about the situation and Campbell's professionalism in handling it.

"It was just to say Jason's had a tough offseason so far with all the stuff swirling around," Zorn said. "I commended him for dealing with it in a very positive way and he's taken that to the field."

Campbell had a strong minicamp, showing that despite his laid-back manner, the attempts to replace him might have given him extra motivation in his contract year.

"I thought he was taking charge out there," Zorn said. "He's so much further along than he was last year, much more comfortable knowing what to expect."

--Running back Clinton Portis, fullback Mike Sellers, linebacker London Fletcher and safety LaRon Landry weren't on hand for this week's "voluntary" organized team activities. All except Portis had also skipped the entire offseason conditioning program.

--Backup linebacker Khary Campbell told The Washington Times that he won't return for a fifth season. The Redskins' top special teams tackler three years running turned down the same minimum salary deal that longtime NFL starters Phillip Daniels, Renaldo Wynn and Robert Thomas accepted.

"That wasn't something I was going to accept," said Campbell, 30, who said he's in talks with other teams. "And they drafted two linebackers. They did what they had to do and I'm going to do what I have to do."

--Fifth-round pick Cody Glenn apologized for lying about why he was suspended for the final three games of his senior season at Nebraska after school officials debunked his story about being suspended for selling tickets. However, Glenn, who missed the final two days of minicamp with a pulled hamstring, wouldn't go public with the truth per an agreement with Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini.

"I can't get into specifics," Glenn said. "It's kind of a deal with the University of Nebraska, me and Coach Pelini. I regret the comment and the whole situation and I'm just trying to move on. I regret misleading anybody. It caused a lot of ruckus that I regret."

--DT Albert Haynesworth's hearing in Franklin, Tenn., on two misdemeanors was postponed from April 28 until June 8, but on May 4, the defensive tackle was slapped with a $7.5 million civil suit arising from the same traffic accident last Dec. 13, 2007 in Nashville.

The Tennessean reported that Corey Edmonson, the driver of the other vehicle which crashed into a concrete median, has had two surgeries, will need another operation, faces medical bills that could exceed $1 million and is unable to work.

Haynesworth allegedly tried to pass Edmonson on Interstate 65 while driving in excess of the speed limit. The police report said that Haynesworth's Ferrari made contact with Edmonson's Mercury and caused it to slam into a concrete barrier. The accident occurred just four days after Haynesworth had been placed on supervised probation by a Williamson County judge for driving more than 100 miles per hour on I-65 in March.

Haynesworth, who starred for the University of Tennessee and the Tennessee Titans before signing with the Redskins on Feb. 27, pleaded not guilty on March 30 to charges of reckless driving and having an expired registration. Haynesworth remains free on a $1,000 bond. If convicted, he faces a sentence of up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for reckless driving and 30 days in jail and a $50 fine for the expired registration.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "What I was agonizing over last year that I'm not agonizing over this year was every time a mistake was made, nobody, not even the coaches knew what to say so I'm in there going, 'No, we don't do it that way. We do it this way.' I was teaching everybody. Now I'm sitting back and all the assistant coaches know exactly what's going on and they're very aggressive in correcting and making sure we're doing it right. That makes a huge difference because then we can take another step and work on things that we didn't even touch on last year." -- Jim Zorn on the changes from his first minicamp as coach last year to this year's session.
