Washington Redskins Notes, Quotes 2009-05-01
--The Redskins hope they have ended their merry-go-round at punter with the signing of Hunter Smith. The 31-year-old Smith averaged 43.4 yards gross and 35.5 net during his decade with the Colts including 44.2 gross and 38.8 net in 2008.

A day after adding Smith, the Redskins cut veteran journeyman Dirk Johnson, whom they had signed on March 5 to compete with the unproven Zac Atterberry, a January addition who was in camp with Chicago last summer.

--Drew Rosenhaus, Rocky McIntosh's new agent, is working on an extension for the weak-side linebacker whose contract expires after the season. Rosenhaus met with Cerrato and vice president of football administration Eric Schaffer in Ashburn on Thursday (April 30). McIntosh, 26, was second on the defense in tackles in 2007 and 2008, his first two years as a starter.

Coach Jim Zorn said that McIntosh will be given a look on the strong side in May's minicamp and organized team activities because they don't have other great candidates at the spot.

--The Redskins signed former Buffalo tackle Mike Williams, who has been living with left guard Derrick Dockery, his ex-Texas linemate, on April 24. The fourth pick in the 2002 draft, Williams struggled at right tackle or left guard and was cut before he would've counted a whopping $10.8 million against the 2006 salary cap. Since Williams, 29, was out of the league the past two years -- and didn't play a snap in 2006 -- signing him is taking a flyer rather than a true threat to incumbent right tackles Jon Jansen and Stephon Heyer.

Williams won't participate in minicamp because he weighs 410 pounds, 40 more than during his last NFL season, 2006.

"He is two guys standing by side with their arm around each other," coach Jim Zorn said. "That's how wide he is."

--Former Heisman Trophy finalist Chase Daniel of Missouri and ex-Maryland offensive linemen Scott Burley and Edwin Williams head a group of 13 undrafted rookies who signed with the Redskins.

Daniel, who passed for 100 touchdowns with just 39 interceptions in three years as the Tigers' starter, will compete with 37-year-old Todd Collins and 2008 sixth-round draft choice Colt Brennan for the two backup jobs behind starting quarterback Jason Campbell.

The 6-3, 315-pound Williams, an All-ACC center, could be a surprise since the Redskins don't have a true backup to center Casey Rabach. Williams, a DeMatha High graduate, was a three-year starter for the Terps. The 6-5, 335-pound Burley succeeded Washington's Stephon Heyer as Maryland's left tackle in 2007.

Defensive end Derek Walker was the only one of the 13 new Redskins to be included in the NFL's player profiles of draft prospects. The 6-4, 268-pound Walker was a four-year starter at Illinois and ranks seventh in school history with 15 sacks.

The Redskins also added 6-3, 322-pound run-stopping tackle Antonio Dixon, who played as a sophomore at Miami for Washington defensive line coach John Palermo. Defensive tackle Brigham Harwell (6-1, 280) recorded 24 tackles for losses in three years as a starter at UCLA where he played for former Redskins cornerbacks coach DeWayne Walker.

At 6-4, 237, Jaison Williams has the size to be the big receiver the Redskins have been looking for, but his production at Oregon tumbled from an average of 62 catches, 914 yards and seven touchdowns in 2006-07 to 36 catches for 473 yards and four touchdowns as a senior. Receiver John Halman (6-3, 210) played at Concordia, an NAIA school, but he averaged 38.7 yards per catch in two games against NCAA FCS competition in 2008.

Tight end Robbie Agnone (6-6, 256) has great size and he caught 69 passes with 11 touchdowns during three seasons at Delaware, after following 2008 Baltimore Ravens rookie quarterback Joe Flacco in transferring from Pitt. Tight end Devin Frischknecht (6-3, 251) started as a senior at Washington State after transferring from Snow (Utah) College.

Middle linebacker Ronnie Palmer (6-2, 245) had 275 tackles, nine sacks and six interceptions while starting 41 games at Arizona. Doug Dutch (5-11, 204), a graduate of Gonzaga High, played sparingly at receiver and cornerback for Michigan. Lendy Holmes (6-1, 201) made a similar position switch at Oklahoma but started three years at safety, leading the Sooners with five interceptions in 2008 and finishing second with 89 tackles.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "They come in like that until they go to three days of (minicamp) and (then) they humble. It don't bother me. I'm going to take him through some things. I haven't seen the guy. I don't even know his name and I love football so that tells you (something). I know who's going to get drafted where. I didn't know the kid." -- Fred Smoot on third-round draft pick Kevin Barnes who noted when he was drafted that his fellow cornerback, 30, "is getting a little bit older."
