Washington Redskins Notes, Quotes 2009-04-27
--The Redskins hope they have ended their merry-go-round at punter with the signing of former Colts punter Hunter Smith. The 31-year-old Smith averaged 43.4 yards gross and 35.5 net during his decade with the Colts including 44.2 gross and 38.8 net in 2008.

A day after adding Smith, the Redskins cut veteran journeyman Dirk Johnson, whom they had signed on March 5 to compete with the unproven Zac Atterberry, a January addition who was in camp with Chicago last summer.

--LB Rocky McIntosh's new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is working on an extension for the weak-side linebacker whose contract expires after the season. Rosenhaus met with Cerrato and vice president of football administration Eric Schaffer in Ashburn on Thursday. McIntosh, 26, was second on the defense in tackles in 2007 and 2008, his first two years as a starter.

Coach Jim Zorn said on Sunday that McIntosh will be given a look on the strong side in May's minicamp and organized team activities because they don't have other great candidates at the spot.

--OT Mike Williams, a former top-5 draft choice, signed with Washington. He has been living with left guard Derrick Dockery, his ex-Texas linemate. The fourth pick in the 2002 draft, Williams struggled at right tackle and left guard and was cut before he would've counted a whopping $10.8 million against the 2006 salary cap. Since Williams, 29, was out of the league the past two years -- and didn't play a snap in 2006 -- signing him is taking a flier rather than a true threat to incumbent right tackles Jon Jansen and Stephon Heyer.

Williams won't participate in minicamp because he weighs 410 pounds, 40 more than during his last NFL season, 2006. Tackle Chris Samuels (triceps) and receiver Malcolm Kelly (knee) won't be on the field either. Guard Randy Thomas (neck) and safety Reed Doughty (back) will be limited.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He is two guys standing by side with their arm around each other. That's how wide he is." -- Coach Jim Zorn on newly-signed 410-pound offensive tackle Mike Williams.
