-- Carlos Rogers can't stop smiling these days. The fourth-year cornerback is happy that his reconstructed right knee is feeling good. And he's gleeful at proving the skeptics wrong.

"I was supposed to be on PUP, but I told you I was going to be on the field," said Rogers, who worked in all the individual drills once training camp opened on July 20 before returning to full-time duty nine days later for the first time since tearing his ACL and MCL last Oct. 28 at New England.

Rogers was also quite pleased that he felt good the morning of July 30 after participating in both practices the previous day.

"I expected to have some pain when I woke up this morning because (linebacker) Rocky (McIntosh) on his first day back (after knee surgery), but I had no pain, no swelling," Rogers said. "I feel good."

Coach Jim Zorn was excited that Rogers showed no ill effects after tumbling to the grass while covering a bomb and that he had displayed "very sudden" explosion while closing on a short pass.

"Carlos looked good," said receiver James Thrash. "He was moving well. If you didn't know he had a knee (injury), you wouldn't know by watching him."

-- Two of Washington's top three picks, receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly will have to wait to make their pro debuts because of tender hamstrings. Thomas, injured on July 24, remains sidelined. Kelly, who was hurt two days later, returned to team drills on July 30 but Zorn didn't want to push him to face the Colts.

-- Seven expected 2008 starters didn't play in the Hall of Fame Game. That list includes defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery (hand), safety LaRon Landry (hamstring), offensive tackle Chris Samuels (recovering from elbow surgery), linebacker Rocky McIntosh (recovering from knee surgery), running back Clinton Portis, defensive end Jason Taylor and linebacker London Fletcher. Portis is notorious for disdaining preseason. Taylor is still settling in after joining the Redskins on July 22 and Fletcher had a veteran's night off.

-- Special teams coach Danny Smith worked on Detroit's staff with Jim Zorn from 1999-2000 and he revealed that the Redskins brass used him to make contact in January with their next coach. Smith and Zorn were having lunch at the Senior Bowl when the former's cellphone buzzed. The Redskins were calling. Zorn was soon hired as offensive coordinator. Two weeks after that, he was promoted to head coach.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Last year, Stephon didn't have a real pretty body. He would never take his shirt off. He thinks he's Tarzan now. He's walking with a little bit of a swagger. He's going to be a whale of a football player for us." -- Offensive line coach Joe Bugel on offensive tackle Stephon Heyer.
