Jim Zorn is on a roll. After apprenticing for 11 years as a quarterbacks coach in Detroit and Seattle, the former Seahawks quarterback is thriving as a first-time play-caller.

The rookie coach's Washington Redskins offense is sixth in the league after five games, the last four of which have been victories, including impressive triumphs over NFC East rivals Dallas and Philadelphia on the road.

Jason Campbell is the NFC's fifth-ranked passer with a 96.7 quarterback rating. Despite being blanked by the Eagles, No. 1 receiver Santana Moss is third among NFC wideouts with 27 catches and fourth with 421 yards and three touchdowns. Clinton Portis is second in the NFC with 514 rushing yards and third with four touchdowns.

And incredibly, the Redskins have yet to turn the ball on offense. Their only fumble, which was lost, was on a punt return by Antwaan Randle El.

Zorn's on such a roll that he can call a play that the Redskins practiced just once last week and have it go for the go-ahead touchdown against the Eagles even though Randle El, a quarterback at Indiana, thinks he might have crossed the line of scrimmage before he threw the 18-yard touchdown to tight end Chris Cooley in the third quarter to make it 16-14.

"It's a red zone play and at that particular time it was one of our calls," Zorn said. "You have to be a veteran player to be able to execute it and that's what the difference was on those kind of plays: the execution. It was fun to watch."

And while juggling options with the Redskins needing a first down to kill the clock with 2:48 left and facing fourth-and-1 at the Philadelphia 38, Zorn listened to Portis.

"Clinton rolls by and says, 'Give me the draw,' " Zorn related. "I said OK. (The 3-yard gain) wasn't necessarily there, but he willed it. Was the call great? I don't know. But the execution was great."

That was the second time in four weeks that Zorn has gone for it on fourth-and-short in the waning minutes rather than punt and count on his defense. His offensive players are loving it. and the defensive players aren't complaining.

"We get good response because our guys are executing," Zorn said. "I guess there's a 50-50 chance. I could be a goat as well for making the call. I hope it's not borderline crazy. I hope it's sound. The thing I always try to keep in mind is when we're on offense, we're attacking."
