The members of the Redskins' offense were of two minds after managing to score just once in their season-opening 16-7 loss at the New York Giants on Thursday night.
Count center Casey Rabach and receiver Antwaan Randle El among those worried that Washington's starters have scored just 10 points on their last 22 possessions dating to the start of the Aug. 16 preseason game at the New York Jets.
"I don't buy this 'it's only one game' stuff," Rabach said. "We gotta start playing now. I'm really frustrated. We have too much talent to play like this."
Randle El didn't want to hear any "learning curve" excuses either.
"We've had our chances at the learning curve in preseason and training camp," Randle El said. "We all need to be over that and be ready to put our best out there and we didn't do that (Thursday)."
But quarterback Jason Campbell "It takes a little time" and receiver Santana Moss, who teamed up for the only touchdown by the starters during those 22 possessions (with 13 seconds to go in the first half against the Giants) counseled patience.
"We're going to come together slowly," Moss said. "We can't come out here and be world-beaters. We just have to take our time and progress week in and week out which I feel we can do."
Coach Jim Zorn, whose West Coast passing scheme is causing the adjustment since he maintained the running game of the previous staff, had the final word.
"When you watch video, the answer is there about why we're not scoring," Zorn said. "When you're putting together a new scheme, it doesn't matter whose offense it was, there's a certain learning curve. Every offense takes time. Even the Giants. They're the defending Super Bowl champions and they didn't have it all together either. We will get better. We just didn't convert those third downs (3 for 13). That was the key part of the game. We need to improve in a lot of little areas. If we can ... we'll get in the end zone."
