The Redskins are considered the NFL's best at separating fans from their money. But other teams are catching up.
In 1997, the first year for the Redskins in their new stadium in Landover, then-owner Jack Kent Cooke kicked up prices dramatically, with average ticket costs climbing from $36 to $53. By the time Dan Snyder took over in 1999, the Team Marketing Report's Fan Cost Index rated a game at FedEx Field as the most expensive in the NFL.
The Redskins held the first or second spot in the Fan Cost Index for another eight years, as Snyder reached even deeper into fans' pockets. During that time, parking climbed from $12 to $35.
This year, the average ticket costs $79. Total cost for a family of four, including hot dogs, parking, and other amenities: $441. That sounds pricey, but the Skins no longer top the Fan Cost Index. Five teams cost more to see, including recent Super Bowl contenders the New York Giants and Chicago Bears.
A game in New England is the most expensive, at an average of nearly $600 for a family of four. The Patriots have been to a few Super Bowls. Coming into this season, the Redskins under Snyder are 68-76.
