THE NEW Jeff George?

It has been reported that the Washington Redskins are one of several teams interested in trading for Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, who is being described as angry, disgruntled and disenchanted. He is also talented. The Redskins issued the standard denial, but given their colorful history of player acquisitions and the credibility of the reporter, who strongly vouched for his sources, the notion is not farfetched.

Cutler is furious because the Broncos tried to trade him so they could get Matt Cassel. Replacing Tom Brady in New England last season, Cassel played surprisingly well under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the new Denver head coach. Cassel knows McDaniels' system.

Cassel has since been traded to Kansas City. Cutler, meanwhile, has feuded with McDaniels, implied that owner Pat Bowlen lied to him, skipped workouts and demanded a trade. All that, combined with a temperament some find irksome (claiming his arm is stronger than John Elway's, while perhaps true, wasn't smart), has prompted more than a few comparisons with - cue the scary music - Jeff George. This is a red flag big enough to cover FedEx Field.

Whether or not the link is valid, its mere mention should cause the Redskins to run for the hills. Back in 2000, owner Dan Snyder, enamored with George's million-dollar arm and oblivious to his 10-cent head, signed George to replace steady Brad Johnson. It was a disaster. George quickly wore out his welcome, and the Redskins quickly went nowhere.

Today's Redskins already have a quarterback, Jason Campbell, who has shown promise and is developing under coach Jim Zorn and his system. Whether or not Cutler really is another George will be determined in time. But the Redskins should still forget about it - if they have learned their lessons. Then again, that's always to be determined, too.

THEY SAID WHAT?
